Outstanding Service to the Field Award: Direct Support Professional - Gail Jennings

Gail became part of the Babcock Center family in August1990 and is currently a House Manager at the Garmony and Old Saybrook homes. Gail works tirelessly on behalf of people with lifelong disabilities. Her motto is teamwork and she practices what she preaches. She is always willing to do whatever needs to be done to ensure that her homes run smoothly and is frequently presented as a role model to her peers. She leads by example and as a result her staff are competent and committed to providing the best possible supports to the people who reside in these homes.

The Babcock Center’s mission is to empower and support each individual to fulfill his or her potential. Gail embraces this mission with passion and conviction. She treats everyone she encounters with dignity and respect and actively engages the people she supports within the community. She ensures that they are known at local banks, restaurants, barbershops and stores. As a result, members of the community see them simply as customers, NOT Babcock Center residents. She always encourages the people she supports to make choices and to be as independent as possible and is always there to support and encourage them in their efforts, no matter what.

Gail is also loved and respected by the family members of the people she supports. They trust her implicitly and know that their loved ones are receiving the best possible supports available under her leadership. One family member remarked that they have seen her take a questionable staff member under her wing and transform them into a top-notch direct support provider. This statement alone speaks volumes of Gail’ s commitment to the people she supports.

In August 2010, as a result of her hard work and exceptional efforts on behalf of the people she supports, Gail was awarded the Mary L. Duffie Service to Others Award. This award is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an individual at the Babcock Center and places her within an elite group of people who have demonstrated extraordinary service and commitment to enhancing the lives of people with lifelong disabilities within the community. She is truly a gift to the people she supports, their families and the Babcock Center.
